Hey everyone! I’ve decided that during the Great Pandemic of 2020 I would start blogging a bit about my experience as a makeup artist and some of my past shoots. I’m starting with one of my most recent ones, where the colors used were centered around a neon color scheme.
It’s important when doing a photoshoot with multiple looks to think of a “story”, or theme. Even if the looks are different, it’s important that they look cohesive when next to each other. That’s especially important if you’re submitting the images to a magazine (which we did not with this one). The tying factor here was the use of bight colors in each look.
Now when deciding which look to do first, I typically center it around what I’m going to do with the hair. Braids, ponytails, etc. have a high chance of leaving creases so I tend to save those for last if possible. Things like shooting location or wardrobe list may call for an updo halfway through the shoot and in those cases, you just have to go with the flow. If I can order the makeup looks by increasing pigmentation, I do, as it makes it easier to remove/add on top, but hair typically takes precedence.
This look was inspired by the concept of negative space eyeliner. It wasn’t as visible on the further out pictures, but tests are for both creating and learning! I try, in general, to keep one focal point in a makeup look, so the eyes are the main piece of this look (but as you see below, sometimes if they’re simple shapes, I’ll have two). Skincare is SO important in makeup artistry, especially in macro beauty like above. I go further into detail here about my favorite skincare products for every skin type and how I decide what to do for each client’s skin. Here are the products for this look:
Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mask
Tatcha Water Cream
MAC Rapid Response Eye Cream
MAC Fix+ Spray
Soapbrows
Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyebrow Powder
Danessa Myricks WaterProof Cream Vivid Palette
Motives Cosmetics Liquid Metal Eye Shadow in Surge
Milk Makeup Kush Mascara
Kasha Individual Lashes
MAC Face and Body
MAC Conceal and Correct Palette
NARS Liquid Blush in Orgasm
Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb in Fu$$y
Look 2 had a simple change of hair with a side braid, but I really like how it changed the way her hair framed her face. Due to the simple nature of the eyeshadow shape, I decided a bright lip wouldn’t be overkill. The white eyeshadow was actually unintentional the way I did it. Originally I wanted a shape liner look, but the white eyeliner ended up being patchy and cracked, so I ended up taking a white eyeshadow and buffing it offer the top, giving it a more diffused look. Honestly, I like it better than my original idea.

Honestly, the design for this graphic eyeliner was created on a whim. I often feel like I overthink “shapes” for eyeliner, trying to create something different, but when I go with the shape of the eye, that’s usually when I’m most pleased. Yellow eyeliner is usually quite a battle, as it always seems to go on patchier and dry patchier. If anyone has found one that actually works I’d LOVE to hear about it in the comments.
